Allie’s Marketing Mix - New Year's Hiring Trends

By Allie Crone, Vice President at TurnkeyZRG

Happy New Year!  2023 has kicked off with an influx and interest in Communications roles as crisis in the sports and entertainment world continues, and there are continued predictions of an economic downturn.  As I discuss trends and priorities among executives, both with candidates and clients, there are several trends that continuously come up.

The first is a focus on reputation management.  Over the past few years Crisis Communications experience has been a top priority when recruiting for executive level positions.  Although it is still extremely important to have a plan and prepare for crisis, organizations are looking for proactive, strategic, and on-going actions to build a positive reputation for their organization.  This strategy should be built regardless of the state of crisis the organization is in.  Employers want to hear how you have effectively elevated the reputation of an organization, and potentially just as important, how that was measured.

The next trend, tying into what was addressed above, we are hearing from clients is the desire to move Communications to being more measurable, especially quantitatively.  Communications can add significant value to an organization and creating a way to measure that is crucial.  Other industries have already begun implementing data driven Communications strategies and candidates looking to advance their career should look to incorporate process and strategies.

The final trend I’ve been hearing more about is the alignment of External and Internal Communications.   Employees must feel they are connected to the company narrative and that the same story is being told.  In all our searches the past 3 years in Communications, internal communications have been a priority and that skillset is more valuable than ever.

Hiring for communications jobs is up and is expected to continue to increase.  Trends and technology in the space will continue to improve and it is imperative for executives to be aware of the ever-changing environment.
