Position Summary:

gamma. is seeking a dynamic and highly skilled legal professional to join their senior team as the Vice President of Legal. The VP of Legal will be responsible for shaping and executing the company legal strategy, driving the negotiation and documentation of acquisitions, investments, and artist partnerships; ensuring compliance with industry regulations; and safeguarding intellectual property.  

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Legal Strategy and Oversight

    • Develop and execute the company's legal strategy to protect its intellectual property, contractual interests, and overall business operations. 

    • Provide strategic legal guidance to senior management on a wide range of legal issues impacting the company. 

  • Contract Negotiation and Drafting

    • Lead and oversee the negotiation, drafting, and review of a variety of agreements, including recording, licensing, distribution, merchandise, and artist agreements. 

    • Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders to ensure legal agreements align with business objectives. 

  • Intellectual Property Management

    • Manage and protect the company's intellectual property portfolio, including copyrights, trademarks, and other proprietary rights. 

    • Advise on copyright and trademark matters, including registration, licensing, and enforcement. 

  • Litigation Management

    • Oversee and manage legal disputes, including litigation and alternative dispute resolution processes. 

    • Work closely with external legal counsel, ensuring effective representation and resolution of legal matters. 

  • Regulatory Compliance

    • Ensure the company's compliance with relevant laws and regulations, including those related to the music industry, intellectual property, and contracts. 

    • Stay on top of legal developments and advise the organization on potential impacts. 

  • Risk Management

    • Identify and assess legal risks associated with business activities and propose strategies to mitigate those risks. 

    • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legal requirements. 

  • Government and Industry Relations

    • Engage with government bodies, industry associations, and stakeholders to represent the company's legal interests. 

    • Participate in industry initiatives and advocate for policies that align with the company's goals. 

  • Team Leadership

    • Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing legal team. 

    • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture that emphasizes professionalism, integrity, and excellence. 

Required Qualifications:  

  • Strong expertise in intellectual property law, entertainment law, and contractual negotiations. Experience in corporate law / transactions is a plus.  

  • Proven experience in managing legal teams and overseeing complex legal matters. 

  • Excellent negotiation, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. 

  • Strategic thinker with the ability to provide legal guidance that aligns with business objectives. 

  • Must be able to meet deadlines consistently and effectively while working under pressure; candidate must be able to manage multiple assignments at any given time and prioritize them effectively and appropriately. 

  • Passionate and knowledgeable about music.   

Background Requirements:  

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school; admission to the bar in the relevant jurisdiction (preferably New York or California). 

  • Minimum 7 years of post-bar experience, with dedicated experience in the music industry (e.g., entertainment law firm or legal & business affairs at a music company)
